The programs in this cluster train for the related occupations, but do not function as exclusive ports of entry. People also prepare for these occupations through other training programs and related work experience.

372011 Janitors and cleaners, except maids and housekeeping cleaners,
372012 Maids and housekeeping cleaners, except private household

No special education is required for most janitorial or cleaning jobs, but beginners should know simple arithmetic and be able to follow instructions. High school shop courses are helpful for jobs involving repair work. Most cleaners learn their skills on the job.

Additional national information available: The number of building cleaning workers is expected to grow 14 percent between 2006 and 2016, which is faster than the average for all occupations. This occupation will have, in fact, one of the largest numbers of new jobs arise, about 570,000 over the 2006-16 period.

Supervise work activities of cleaning personnel in hotels, hospitals, offices, and other establishments.
 
37-2011 Janitors and Cleaners, Except Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners
Keep buildings in clean and orderly condition. Perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing rubbish. Duties may include tending furnace and boiler, performing routine maintenance activities, notifying management of need for repairs, and cleaning snow or debris from sidewalk.
 
37-2012 Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners
Perform any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain private households or commercial establishments, such as hotels, restaurants, and hospitals, in a clean and orderly manner. Duties include making beds, replenishing linens, cleaning rooms and halls, and vacuuming.
 
37-2019 Building Cleaning Workers, All Other
All building cleaning workers not listed separately.
